Abstract

The present study focuses on use of dumbbell shaped shear walls in multi-storeyed structure and its effectiveness in resisting earthquake forces. For comparative study, structure with rectangular shear wall is also analysed and the results are compared. A  G+15 structure, situated in earthquake zone V, is considered for study. All frames are designed for the same gravity loading. The response spectrum method is used for seismic analysis. ETABS software is used for analysis, and the results are compared. The results are obtained in the form of top story displacement, story drift, base shear, and displacement. The structures are analysed with medium soil, and the results are compared. Different structural parameters, viz., base shear, story shear and storey stiffness, etc. are studied. Comparative study is made.  It is observed that both types of shear walls viz. dumbbell shaped and rectangular shaped shear walls perform equally well in resisting the earthquake forces.
